Profile Overview
Tanaka Margret Kachara is a Senior Associate and the chief intellectual property attorney at the firm. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Degree from the University of Zimbabwe and is also a certified Data Protection Officer, accredited through the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ).
Tanaka specializes in intellectual property and data protection law. Her practice includes registration, renewal, and enforcement of trademarks, patents, industrial designs, utility models, and copyrights, as well as intellectual property litigation. She advises clients before local and international bodies, including matters relating to intellectual property protection in Zimbabwe and at the African Regional Intellectual Property Office (ARIPO). She has further contributed to several intellectual property projects and capacity-building initiatives supported by the British Council, the European Union and ARIPO.
Tanaka also advises both local and international clients on data protection issues including policy and regulatory compliance.
In addition to her legal practice, Tanaka currently serves as the President of Zimbabwe Institute of Patents and Trademarks Attorneys (ZIPTA) and is an active member of the International Trademark Association (INTA). She also serves as a Non-Executive Director on the board of a private company, providing strategic oversight and advising on governance at board level.
Tanaka has authored several articles on intellectual property law and related areas of law and is passionate about the role of intellectual property in advancing innovation and economic development
